Glossary of Ironwork Terms

This Glossary, written by Peter Parkinson and funded by the Foyle Foundation, is the first of its kind focused solely on ironwork, providing an invaluable resource of useful words and their definitions all in one place.

This project is very much a work in progress and we welcome correspondence about it, including contributions for inclusion in future editions. Please email: info@nhig.org.uk with any suggestions.

In future, when funding allows, we hope to add illustrations for greater clarity and a printed version.

The primary purpose in compiling this glossary was to provide a reference tool when conservation tenders are being written, and to create a common ground of understanding in conversations between blacksmiths, architects, commissioners and others by offering clearly defined terminology.
