‘An experiment on a great scale’: designing Kew’s Palm House

Event Description

This is a SPAB Ireland event.

Dr Kate Teltscher will discuss the creation of the Palm House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.  One of the earliest prefabricated buildings, the Palm House was located at the heart of the gardens and early became the emblem of Kew.  Its innovative design was the result of a remarkable collaboration between three very different individuals: the Dublin iron-founder and self-taught engineer, Richard Turner, the London architect, Decimus Burton and the Cornish chemist, Robert Hunt.  Kate will tell the story of the ambitious scheme to create a glass and iron masterpiece.
