Bridge Over Troubled Water

Bridge Over Troubled Water

I was invited to design one of the Master panels for the themed balustrade for the Parade Gardens bandstand in Bath as part of BathIRON, a festival designed to bring together contemporary design and traditional techniques. The theme was music, and the design is based on the Simon and Garfunkel song, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The idea of using this song as the inspiration for the panel came to me at a low point in my life and was drawn from a hospital bed.

When you’re weary, feeling small

When tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all (all)

I’m on your side, oh, when times get rough

And friends just can’t be found

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down

It was made during the inspiring BathIRON Festival of ironwork by a mixed team of experienced smiths and students. The materials used were mild steel, copper and stainless steel.  The finish is galvanised, painted and gilded.
