A New Bandstand Balustrade for Bath

Looking for a project to showcase heritage skills at the heart of BathIRON, Andy Thearle, the festival’s Artistic Director, noticed the bandstand in Parade Gardens.  Utilitarian and uninspiring, the ironwork balustrade seemed at odds with its majestic surroundings.  And so an idea was born: a new balustrade for the Parade Gardens bandstand, made using traditional ironworking skills, designed by Master Smiths from around the UK, and forged in the fire live at this 4-day event.  Fitting its purpose as a community stage for live music, the new balustrade would represent a musical score.  A competition run through Bath Spa University gave us our music, the newly composed piece Hammer & Anvil by Jake Garratt (listen here), and work began on forging the notes for the score, while a call went out to Master Blacksmiths around the country to send in their music-inspired designs for the central panels on each side of the balustrade …

Fast forward a few months and the designs are pouring in.  Take a look at some of the balustrade panels designs and find about the Master Craftspeople who will be making them at BathIRON here.
